How to Enable SWAT

The Samba Web Administration Tool (SWAT) is a free web administration tool that is part of the Samba suite. SWAT is designed to let you configure your Samba server by connecting to port 901 through your Web browser. The entire Samba suite was developed for use with Unix and similar operating systems, such as Linux, BSD and Solaris. By default, SWAT is disabled when you install it. You have to manually enable it by changing the control file.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in as the root user.

    • 2

Find the SWAT control file. It is named either "inetd.conf" or "xinetd.conf". You can typically find it the "etc" directory.

    • 3

Open the control file with a text editor.

    • 4

Find the line of text that says "disable = yes," and change it to "disable = no." Save your changes. SWAT is now enabled.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to make a quick backup of the original control file before altering it.
