Cellini Spiral Directions

Cellini Spiral Directions thumbnail
Use three different sizes of beads to create the Cellini spiral.

The Cellini spiral stitch, also known a spiral peyote stitch, produces a tubular spiral. Close the ends of the tube to create a necklace or bracelet. Leave the ends open, and thread it on a chain or ribbon as a dramatic charm. The stitch uses three different sizes of beads to create the characteristic twist. Use evenly sized spaced bead sizes such as 12/0, 10/0 and 8/0 to create a smooth twist. Use dramatic size differences such as 15/0, 10/0 and 6/0 to create a deeply ridged spiral. Color and size choices are up to you. Experiment with different combinations to create new and exciting looks.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 16 to 20-inch length of beading thread.

    • 2

Tie a knot in one end of thread, and thread the needle on the other end.

    • 3

String six of the small beads, four of the medium beads, two of the large beads and four of the medium beads onto the thread.

    • 4

Pass the needle through the first two small beads to create a ring.

    • 5

String one of the small beads onto the thread.

    • 6

Skip over the bead next to where the needle came out, and thread it through the next bead.

    • 7

Thread a bead onto the string matching the bead you just passed through.

    • 8

Skip over the bead next to where the needle came out, and thread it through the next bead.

    • 9

Repeat Steps 7 and 8 until you come back around to the original line of small beads.

    • 10

Thread the needle through the second small bead of the original row and the first bead of the new row you just created.

    • 11

String a bead the same as the bead you just passed through.

    • 12

Thread the needle through the next bead. You no longer will skip over a bead while finishing the Cellini spiral tube.

    • 13

Continue stringing and sewing beads according to steps 11 and 12. Each time you complete a turn around the spiral, thread the needle through the first bead of the row below and the first bead of the row you just completed to step-up to the next row.

    • 14

Place the spiral on the work surface after you have completed four or five rows.

    • 15

Press in the center of the spiral while pulling on the loose end of the thread. The spiral will collapse upward into a tube.

    • 16

Tie off the thread when you reach your desired length.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you run out of thread before reaching your desired length, cut another length of thread and tie it to the end of the first thread. You can hide the knot beneath one of the beads in your spiral.

  • Thread the growing tube on a dowel rod or pen to help hold the shape while you work.
