Stencils can be used to stain design on walls and floors.

Making a freehand version of a business logo or favorite graphic is not feasible to a majority of building owners. Hiring someone with artistic talent is expensive, but leaving you a shabby sign or mural is devastating to the aesthetic. Fortunately, there is an easy way to apply a stain to wood or concrete, which requires little to no artistic talent.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area. Excess debris in the area disrupts the final pattern and also adds little spots to your design that can harm the final application. Sweep or vacuum the area to remove dirt, dust and other items.

    • 2

Measure your design. Use a measuring tape, pencil and leveling tool to ensure straight lines where needed. Use a pad and paper to plot out your design before applying it to the area you intend to stencil, if needed.

    • 3

Prepare and apply the stain. Follow the direction in the stain kit for preparation. Apply the stain to the entire work area, but stay within the boundaries you plotted.

    • 4

Lay down the stencil. Grab another person to help you with larger stencils. Roll it out on a clean surface away from your work area. Carry the stencil over to the work area and place it on top of the stained area. Apply a resist or another medium as directed by the stain and stenciling kit instructions. Apply to the areas left uncovered by the stencil material.

    • 5

Allow it to dry. Follow the drying instructions and remove the stencil as directed. Allow for more drying time after the stencil is removed to ensure that your design is set.

    • 6

Preserve with stain. Apply a dark stain over the entire design to preserve it from the elements. Allow for drying before unveiling your design.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean your stencils after each use to get the most out of your investment. Many are reusable.
