How to Boil Whole Rutabaga
For cooks unfamiliar with rutabagas, the hard root vegetable can be intimidating. Rutabagas can be eaten as an appetizer vegetable alongside carrots and celery sticks. Rutabaga puree makes a complementary addition to soup and stew recipes. One way to cook this vegetable is to boil it. Remove the peel from each rutabaga. Wash the vegetables under a stream of lukewarm water.

Heat a large pot of water to a boil.

Drop whole rutabagas into the boiling water and allow them to boil for 20-30 minutes. Check on the condition periodically by gently testing the softness with a fork. Overcooking will cause rutabagas to disintegrate.

When purchasing rutabagas. they should be firm, smooth-skinned and free of surface punctures.
