How to Make Floating Jig Heads

Mention the word jig head and many anglers will instantly think of a hook with a lead weight molded onto the shank. Although many jigs are designed to get a bait down deep, a floating jig head is designed to do just the opposite. Floating jig heads are designed to float and keep a bait near the surface in areas in which fish are holding or suspended for feeding. Make your own floating jig heads at home with a few basic steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a jig head hook so the point is accessible. Select a foam ear plug with a square or rounded end shape based on personal preference.

    • 2

Insert the point of the jig head hook into the end of the ear plug. Place the point of the hook in the center of the end. Insert the hook point into the smaller rounded end of a shaped ear plug.

    • 3

Push the ear plug over the point, around the bend and up the shank. Continue pushing the ear plug until it contacts the jig hook eye.

    • 4

Cut a small slit along the edge of the ear plug with a knife. Push the ear plug forward on the hook until the foam ear plug surrounds the hook eye. Apply a small amount of quick-dry glue to the end of the plug and cut around the base of the hook eye. Allow the glue to dry for 1 hour.

Paint the floating foam jig head with nail polish. Choose a color such as white, red or black, according to the look you wish to achieve. Also consider painting only eyes on the foam plug or leaving the plug unpainted completely.
