How to Cancel an Unpaid Item on Ebay

Save

That expensive flat-screen television or designer purse you saw on eBay seemed like such a good deal at first. Now that you have bid on and won the item, though, you're beginning to regret it. It is not uncommon for eBay bidders to get caught up in the excitement of an auction, causing them to bid more than they ever intended to. Even if you have not yet paid for the item, you are still legally obligated to do so. If you can convince the seller to cancel the purchase, though, you will not be held responsible for paying for it.

  • Open an Internet browser and navigate to the eBay website. Click "My eBay" at the top of the page.

  • Enter your eBay username and password. Click "Log In" to go to your Account Activity page.

  • Select "Purchase History" located in the box on the left side of the page. Locate the order you want to cancel.

  • Click "More Actions" and then choose "Contact Seller" in the box that appears. Press "Request to Change an Order." Click "Continue" at the bottom of the page.

  • Explain to the seller in the form provided why you cannot or do not want to purchase the item. When you have thoroughly explained the situation, click "Send." The seller will reply to the email address associated with your eBay account.

Tips & Warnings

  • The seller may choose not to cancel the order. If this occurs, you must still pay for it.
