My Synaptics Mouse Pad Is Not Working

The Synaptics TouchPad, or mouse pad, is a finger-driven mouse hardware installed on many models of computer laptops. If you have a Synaptics pointing device on your computer that stops working, you can resolve the issue by installing updated Synaptics drivers on your system. One frustrating aspect of the mouse pad not working is the difficulty in navigating through options on your computer. Fortunately you can find updated Synaptics drivers using Windows Device Manager and can install the drivers using the keyboard.

  • Press the "Windows" key and "R" key at the same time. Type "devmgmt.msc" into the "Run" window and press "Enter." The Windows Device Manager appears.

  • Press "Tab" on your keyboard, then press the down arrow and highlight "Mice and other pointing devices." Press the right arrow on the selection to expand it.

  • Scroll down and highlight "Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad" and press the "Shift" and "F10" keys on your keyboard simultaneously.

  • Scroll down and highlight "Update Driver Software" then press "Enter."

  • Press "Enter" to select "Search automatically for updated driver software." Windows connects to the Internet and downloads and installs the applicable drivers for your device.

  • Press "Enter" after the installation to close the dialog box, then select "Yes" using the arrow keys and press "Enter" to restart the computer.
