How to Render With Rhino on a Mac

Computer-aided design has expanded from two-dimensional drawings to three-dimensional models. The extents provided by three-dimensional modeling create designs that are not simply extruded forms, but sculptural objects to be viewed in the round. The CAD application Rhinoceros 3D, or Rhino, creates complex curvilinear spatial models with commands such as loft, sweep and flow. The Rhinoceros 3D programmers, McNeel and Associates, develop the application for Microsoft Windows, however the company provides a limited version of Rhino for the Apple Macintosh. Some tools, including some rendering elements are not provided in the Rhino Mac version, however you can render completed Windows Rhinoceros models or gray envelopes of elements drawn in the Macintosh version using the Macintosh Rhinoceros "Toucan" renderer.

  • Open Rhinoceros 3D on your Apple Macintosh. Type "Open" in the command line. Select an existing model and click the "Open" button, or type "New" in the command line to create a new model.

  • Draw three-dimensional model elements using the draw and modify commands, such as "Sphere," "Trim," "Line," "Loft" and "Join."

  • Type "Render" in the command line to open the "Toucan Render" window. Select the "Zoom" tools to change the size of the image in the "Toucan Render" window or select "Save" to save the rendered image as a JPG, PNG, TIFF or BMP.
