How to Play a DCR File

Save

DCR is the file extension used by animated movies created by Adobe Director, formerly known as Macromedia Director. The extension is one type of flash file that can be played in the Adobe Shockwave player. Files written in the DCR extension can be opened and played in the shockwave player, with or without an Internet connection, as long as both the DCR file and the media player are both installed on the computer's local hard drive. It's very easy to install and use DCR files, even with basic computer knowledge.

  • Navigate to adobe.com. Click "Adobe Shockwave Player" under "Download" and then click "Agree and Install Now" to install Shockwave to play Flash and DCR files.

  • Open Internet Explorer. DCR files are written specifically for use with the Internet Explorer web browser. You must use Internet Explorer when playing DCR files.

  • Press the "Alt" key to reveal the Internet Explorer menu at the top of the page. Click "File" then "Open" and browse to the location on your hard drive where the DCR file resides. Double-click the DCR file to cause the Shockwave player to load in the Web browser, with your chosen DCR file ready to play.
