Decomposition Tutorial for GIMP

Decomposing an image in the GIMP graphics editor separates the image's colors into multiple layers, each containing a particular color or range of colors. Together, these layers make up the color of the original image. GIMP provides several different decomposition options and images can also be decomposed into multiple separate images rather than into a single image with multiple layers.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the image you want to decompose using the "Open" command in GIMP's "File" menu.

    • 2

Find the "Decompose" filter. Depending on your version of GIMP, this can be found either in the "Components" section of the "Color" menu or in the "Colors" section of the "Filter" menu. Either way, click "Decompose."

    • 3

Check the "Decompose to Layers" box if you want the different channels the image is broken down into to be stored as layers of the same image; uncheck it if you want each channel to become its own separate image.

    • 4

Select the type of decomposition from the drop-down menu. "RGB" splits the image into red, green and blue channels; "CMY" into cyan, magenta and yellow; "CMYK" into cyan, magenta, yellow and black; and so on.

    • 5

Click "OK" to perform the decomposition.
