How to Get Rid of Sebaceous Prominence From Home

Save

"Sebaceous prominence" is a fancy term for "acne." The sebaceous glands, located under the surface of the skin, secrete oil. An overabundance of these oily secretions is one of many possible causes of acne. Hormonal imbalances are another common cause of acne; some people simply have oily skin while others have hormonal imbalances. Yet another category of people have acne caused by both hormonal imbalances and oily skin. Disorders in women, such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, often cause both hormonal fluctuations and oversecretions of oil from the sebaceous glands. There are a number of home remedies to treat acne, though many acne sufferers will still require medical intervention.

Things You'll Need

  • Salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide facial cleanser
  • Oil-free moisturizer
  • Birth control pills or Accutane (you will need a prescription for these)
  • Drink water. 60 percent of your body consists of water and water helps to keep your skin healthy and clear. The average person loses water through exhalation, urination and perspiration on a daily basis. According to the Mayo Clinic (mayoclinic.com), everyone should be drinking between eight and nine glasses of water every day.

  • Go to a drugstore and locate facial cleansers. There are many facial cleansers on the market for people with oily skin and/or acne caused by oily skin; the active ingredients in these cleansers is either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Prices for these facial cleansers run between $5 and $10 on average.

  • Use an oil-free moisturizer on top of your facial cleanser. The oil-free moisturizer is essential since benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid will dry out your skin in the process of removing oil. In order not to cause your sebaceous glands to secrete more oil to compensate, moisturize your face with an oil-free moisturizer.

  • Reduce the amounts of fats and white processed sugars in your diet. These are things which may aggravate your complexion.

  • Look in the mirror and note where your acne is. If it is centered around your jawline and down your neck, then your acne may be caused by hormonal imbalances. In women, this is caused by higher-than-normal amounts of testosterone. Estrogen levels, however, may still be within normal range.

  • Consult a dermatologist if these home remedies are not working for you. Women have two choices of medications to control acne: birth control or Accutane. Birth control -- synthetic estrogen and progesterone pills -- works by reducing the amount of testosterone produced by the adrenal glands. Accutane, which is prescribed for both men and women with severe cystic acne -- literally stops the production of oil under the skin. Accutane may also be a permanent remedy for a large percentage of acne sufferers; the drug also has a long list of side effects, including increased cholesterol, drying of the skin, eyes and lips and - in rarer cases - nausea, vomiting and chest pain. Birth control lacks those side effects but is never a permanent solution for acne.
