How to Unblock Notepad Blocking

Save

If you attempt to start Notepad on your computer but you receive an error such as "This program is blocked by group policy. For more information, contact your system administrator," then you must disable the Group Policy setting that has blocked Notepad. Disabling the setting in Group Policy requires using the Group Policy Editor, a tool that administrators (and only administrators) can use to set program access privileges on computers. To edit the Group Policy setting for Notepad, you must have administrator access on your computer.

  • Log into a Windows account with administrative privileges.

  • Press the "Windows" key and "R" key simultaneously to launch the Windows Run window. Type "gpedit.msc" into the Run window and press "Enter." The Windows Group Policy Editor will appear.

  • Double-click "User Configuration," "Administrative Templates" and then "System" on the left side of the Group Policy Editor.

  • Locate the "Don't run specified Windows applications" setting on the right side of the Group Policy Editor. Right-click and select "Properties." Select the "Disabled" option and click "OK."

  • Locate the "Run only allowed Windows applications" setting on the right side of the Group Policy Editor. Right-click and select "Properties." Select the "Disabled" option and click "OK."

  • Close the Group Policy Editor and restart your computer.
