Make a decorative hairpin using craft supplies.

When you are putting together a fancy outfit, you can make the outfit look more elegant and refined by wearing hair accessories to match. For example, a fancy hairpin can accent a dress or pant suit, which can be color coordinated to match perfectly. If you have difficulty finding a fancy hairpin at a department store or specialty shop, make your own using basic materials that can be purchased at any arts and crafts supply store.

Things You'll Need

  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon, 1/2 inch wide
  • Colorful feathers

Instructions

    • 1

Push a new hot glue stick into the back of a hot glue gun, and plug the gun into an electrical outlet. Heat up the hot glue gun for 5 minutes.

    • 2

Cut a piece of ribbon to measure 12 inches long. Tie the ribbon into a bow.

    • 3

Squirt a nickel-sized dollop of hot glue onto the center knot of the bow, and place six colorful feathers onto the hot glue. Arrange the feathers so they fan out and so the quills are secured into the hot glue dollop. Let the glue cool for 1 minute.

    • 4

Apply a nickel-sized dollop of hot glue onto the center of the fanned out feathers, and press a large silk flower onto the hot glue dollop. Hold the flower in place for 1 minute to allow the glue to cool and harden.

    • 5

Dab a pea-sized dollop of hot glue onto the center of the silk flower, and press a pearlescent bead onto the hot glue dollop. Hold the bead in place for 1 minute to let the glue cool and harden.

    • 6

Squeeze a line of hot glue down the length of one side of a hairpin, and press the back of the flower structure onto the hot glue line. Hold the structure in place for 1 minute so the hot glue can cool and harden. You can now slide the fancy hairpin into your hair to accent your outfit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not touch hot glue directly. Hot glue can cause serious burns on skin.

  • Keep hot glue and hot glue guns out of the reach of children.
