How to Make Music Play on My Tumblr

Many popular blogging platforms, such as Blogger, Tumblr and WordPress, provide a tool to directly upload photos and other image files into new posts on your blog. For audio files, however, most sites do not allow direct hosting, requiring you to host your music elsewhere. Because of the size of the files, you have few options for hosting MP3s. Tumblr provides an option to create special "Audio" posts that upload the file to Tumblr's server with a special streaming media player. Alternatively, you can upload and host your music on a Bandcamp page, which provides a player that can be embedded in a Tumblr post.

Instructions

Tumblr Media Player

1. Visit the Tumblr website and click the "Log In" button in the upper right corner.

2. Enter your registered e-mail and password.

3. Click the "Audio" button.

4. Click "Choose File" and browse your computer for the song you want to upload.

5. Enter information about the song in the indicated field. Click "Create Post."

6. Click the white "Play" button in the post's streaming media player to hear your song.

Bandcamp

1. Visit the Bandcamp homepage and click the "Sign Up Now" button. If you already have a account, you can click "Log In" to enter your account information and skip to Step 5.

2. Create a username and password for your account. Enter your email address as well as your band name or the name under which you make music. Enter a few genres to describe your sound, separated by commas. Enter your location and click "Sign Up."

3. Select a URL for your Bandcamp page. If your band name has not already been claimed on the website, you can simply use the name for your URL.

4. Click the "Add a Track" button. Upload your high-quality audio files and album artwork. Enter relevant track information into all indicated fields. Once you've finished uploading, the track or album will publish to your Bandcamp page.

5. Select the album or song you want to embed in your Tumblr post. Click the "Share/Embed" link and select "Other."

6. Select the size and style of the player. Adjust the color scheme to complement the general layout of your Tumblr page. Click inside the "Copy/paste this code" box to select all of the necessary text. Right-click and copy the text.

7. Log in to your Tumblr page. Start a "Text" post.

8. Click the blue HTML button in the post editor menu. Right-click and paste the Bandcamp player code into the box that appears. Click "Update."

9. Click "Create Post" to share your music in an embedded Bandcamp player.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not post music for which you do not own the license. Sharing copyrighted music can violate certain statutes, and you may be forced to remove the content if you are caught.
