How to Make Finger Armor Spikes

How to Make Finger Armor Spikes thumbnail
A finger armor ring resembles actual armor but is much more decorative.

A finger armor ring is a type of jewelry. These rings resemble armor for hands on medieval plate mail, but they are typically designed to only cover one finger and serve as decoration rather than providing actual finger protection. Because the purpose of a finger armor ring is to be unusual, you may find it desirable to add elements to this kind of ring to customize the look. Spikes are fairly easy to achieve and add a dangerous look.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the finger armor on a piece of paper, and draw a pattern for the spikes. The spikes can be any size.

    • 2

Cut out the pattern with scissors, and hold the bottom of each spike up to its location on the ring to ensure the angles are correct. Adjust the pattern if necessary.

    • 3

Put the pattern on a piece of craft sheet metal, and trace it onto the metal with a pen.

    • 4

Cut out the pieces. Metal sheets designed for crafting are extremely thin, and you should not have trouble cutting out the pieces with a sharp scissors. A pair of tin snips makes a good alternative if you have trouble or if you decide to use a thicker sheet of metal for durability. Tin snips are more dangerous than scissors, however.

    • 5

Hold the pieces gently with pliers, and sand the edges using sandpaper. Sharp metal edges are dangerous, and you may harm yourself or others by adding sharp spikes. If the spikes are small, you may find it easier to use an emery board instead of sandpaper.

    • 6

Decorate the spikes, if desired. You can use a tool such as a nail or ballpoint pen to create raised patterns, or you can paint the spikes; some paints will require a sealer. You can also glue on gemstones using two-part epoxy.

    • 7

Mix some two-part epoxy using a toothpick on a piece of paper, cardboard or other disposable surface. You must have exactly the same amount of each of the epoxy's two parts. Spread a small amount of mixed epoxy on the base of each spike using the toothpick, and glue it to the finger armor. You may need to use an object to prop up the spikes while the epoxy cures.

Tips & Warnings

  • Work in a well-ventilated area when using epoxy, and do not touch the epoxy until it has cured.

  • For three-dimensional spikes, cut triangles and use a pair of pliers to roll them into cones. You can glue these cones to the finger armor in the same way as you glue flat spikes.
