How to Undo a Smudge on Photoshop

The Adobe Photoshop software helps graphic designers fix errors in their work, even if those errors were introduced by someone handling their film or canvases, smudging the ink or leaving dirty fingerprints. Once an electronic copy is available, opening it in Photoshop lets you perform corrections such as fixing smudges. Photoshop uses a process called cloning, where you take an already correct part of your picture and use it to copy over the smudge, as if it was never there.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Adobe Photoshop, and click "File," then click "Open." Navigate to the digital photograph or graphic with the smudge, then double-click the file name.

    • 2

Click the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the "Tools" pane, and zoom in on the smudge so it and the area surrounding it take up the majority of your workspace.

    • 3

Click the "Clone Stamp Tool" in the middle of the "Tools" pane, then hover the cursor over the smudge and note the cursor now looks like a hollow circle. Determine whether the cursor -- without clicking -- is the approximate diameter and height of the smudge.

    • 4

Pull down the clone stamp menu, second from the left option on the toolbar at the top of the screen. The menu is unlabeled but has a small number on it. Click the solid dot head. If the cursor isn't the size of the smudge, slide the "Size" bar to increase or decrease until it is.

    • 5

Hover the cursor over an area next to the smudge, but not directly on top of it. Choose an area with the same colors and textures, such as blades of grass, not half grass, half sidewalk if the smudge is all grass.

    • 6

Press and hold down the "Alt" key, and click the cursor one time. Release the "Alt" key, then the "good" part of the picture is copied into Photoshop's memory.

    • 7

Slide the cursor directly over the top of the smudge. Click the mouse one time, depositing the copied area and seamlessly covering the smudge. Repeat to fix other smudges as desired.
