It's tough to find a mattress that doesn't contain polyurethane.

Polyurethane foam is such a common material found in mattresses, that it's hard to find a mattress that doesn't contain any of this material. Manufacturers started using it in the 1950s as it provided cushioning and support and lacked flammability. If you're shopping for a polyurethane mattress, you're definitely in luck since the market has a ton of them. Before you purchase one, it's wise to grade the mattresses on a range of criteria so that you can be certain you're making the best decision. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the mattress tag of each polyurethane mattress and find out the density rating. The density of the mattress will indicate how long it will last, with higher density mattresses lasting longer. For example, give each mattress a four on a scale of one to five, with five being the best, if it has a 4 lbs. density rating. Give each mattress a five on that same scale if the density is higher than 4 lbs.

    • 2

Read the tag and find out the thickness of the inner polyurethane core. Give each mattress a score on a scale of one to five that matches the number of inches of the foam core. For example, a score of a four represents a 4-inch thickness, the minimum standard of excellence. Give a five to anything thicker than that.

    • 3

Check the tag of the mattress' ILD. This refers to how firm the memory foam is. Give a score of three or below on a scale of one to five for an IDL of 12 or under. Give a score of four for a mattress with an IDL of 13. And give a score of a five for an IDL of 14, 15 or higher.

    • 4

Lay on each mattress for at least 15 to 20 minutes if possible. During that time, roll over and test out a range of sleeping positions. Pay close attention to how the polyurethane mattress supports your neck and back as you rest and move on the bed. Grade the mattress on a scale of one to five, with five being the best.
