How to Put the Back on a Watch

You’re running late. You look down at your watch to see how much time you have before the subway arrives. The hands read the same time they did when you last looked at the watch. You notice the second hand isn’t moving, either. The battery is probably dead. Once you remove the backing to replace the battery, it needs put back on before wearing it. Putting on the watch backing incorrectly can cause it to fall off or damage the parts.

  • Set the watch face-down on a flat, soft surface. A towel over a table or clean pot holder works well. The soft surface prevents scratches.

  • Place the watch back onto the watch, matching up any notches or gaskets.

  • Screw the back into place if necessary. For press-on types, gently apply pressure to the back piece of the watch to pop it into place.

  • Hold the back of the watch horizontally at eye level. Check to make sure back is in place.
