How to Do a Promise Stitch
The promise stitch is a hand-quilting stitch that has been passed down from person to person. It is also known as a simple double stitch or a double running stitch. The stitch was traditionally used for strength to hold the pieces of fabric together. Measuring and beauty aren't a part of this stitch since it's a utility stitch more than a decorative stitch. You can use the promise stitch to hand stitch pieces of fabric together on a quilt.

1
Thread your needle with enough thread. Pull the thread through the needle so both sides of the thread are the same length. This makes the thread twice as strong. It also gives the double stitch its name.
-
2
Set the piece of fabric you want to sew to the quilt on top of the quilt.

3
Pull the needle up through the pieces of fabric you're sewing together. Make one straight stitch about ¼-inch long and push the needle down into the fabric. Make another stitch on the underside of the fabric the same length and repeat the process until the two pieces of fabric are sewn together.

4
Tie off both ends of thread with a knot to hold the stitch in place.
