How to Feather a Nest

How to Feather a Nest thumbnail
Several species of birds use feathers in their nests.

During warm months, many people like to decorate their homes with bird-related articles or use bird articles, such as nests, in their yards to attract more birds or to help keep the birds and their eggs safe from predators. Some birds use feathers in their nests for camouflage as well as to provide a soft setting for the eggs. You can feather your own nest with a few feathers to appeal to birds or for aesthetic purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the bird nest on a flat surface such as a table.

    • 2

Lay out a few feathers and choose ones that are earth-toned to use. Most female birds are colored with browns, off whites, and grays, all colors that provide camouflage while the bird sits on her eggs. These are the colors you should choose when selecting feathers.

    • 3

Lace a few feathers into the bird nest around the top and inside layers. These serve as a marker for the birds so that they may identify their nests.

    • 4

Place a layer of soft moss in the bottom of the nest to help cushion the eggs. You can use any kind of moss, but peat moss is optimal because it drains quickly and is lightweight.

    • 5

Place a few feathers in the bottom of the nest for added cushion for the eggs. If you can secure them in the nest by tucking the quill underneath a piece of the nest, do so.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can purchase all materials online or at a craft store.

  • If birds do not use your nest, do not become discouraged; making their own nest is in their instincts.
