1
Review magazines and prom dress catalogs for ideas and inspiration. Note the styles and designs that you like. For instance, note the neckline, sleeve length and hem line that you desire. Determine what colors and tones you like, and what kinds of embellishments -- such as ribbons, sashes, buttons and sequins -- you desire.

2
Choose a fabric that is suited for the season and the occasion. Homecoming dances are normally held at the beginning of the school year, during the fall. Select a fall-appropriate fabric, such as satin, silk, organza, chiffon, taffeta or velvet. Avoid fabrics with special detailing, such as sequins or beads, which are difficult to sew.

3
Obtain a dress pattern (see resources). Take your waist, hip, bust and length measurements. Sketch the pattern, using your measurements, onto the fabric with a fabric marker and cut with fabric shears. Stitch the pieces together, according to the pattern instructions. Use a seam ripper to undo stitches that need to be corrected.

Add embellishments, if desired. Tie a ribbon around the waist or stitch a lace or organza overlay around the hemline. Alternatively, sew beads or other decorative pieces around the neckline.
