How to Sew a Detached Collar
Detachable collars provide a method for giving a shirt or a dress a new appearance with just one simple change. Detachable collars were fashionable in the 1980s and 1990s, but died out of fashion soon afterward. In the 2010s, the collars saw a brief revival. Since the trend is not mainstream, it can be difficult to find a collar for purchase. You can make your own collar with basic sewing skills and a few supplies.

1
Find a collar pattern on the Internet. Print out the pattern and cut it out. You can also trace around an existing collar of a shirt. Add 2.5 inches for the length and seam allowance.
-
2
Trace the pattern onto the fabric and interfacing. Cut out four fabric pieces and two interfacing pieces.

3
Place the interfacing onto two of the collar pieces. Iron the interfacing to the fabric.
-
4
Stack one collar piece on top of the other, facing the same way. Repeat for the non-interfaced collar pieces. Sew the short edge together using a ½-inch seam allowance. Unfold the fabric pieces and place them on top of each other, making a circular shape. Make sure the interfacing is inside the collar.

5
Sew the two collar pieces together, leaving a 2-inch hole. Turn the collar right side out and sew up the hole. Sew a ¼-inch seam all the way around the collar to reinforce the seams. Sew two 6-inch pieces of ribbon to each front side of the collar so that you can hold the collar on your neck. Use buttons or snaps, if desired.
