How to Do a Side Ponytail
A side ponytail is a variation of the traditional ponytail whereby the tail is positioned at the side rather than at the back of the head. Like the ponytail, a side ponytail is an easy and incredibly versatile updo that suits all hair types. The style can be worn messy and informal, or sleek and glamorous. Your desired finish will depend on how you prepare your hair before styling. Side ponytails work best on medium to long hair. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Shampoo and condition your hair as normal. Towel dry to remove excess moisture.
-
2
Work a styling product -- such as mouse or straightening balm -- through the hair from roots to tips.
-
-
3
Detangle your hair using a wide-tooth comb, working from the ends toward the roots to prevent pulling or tugging.
-
4
Decide which side of your head you want your side ponytail to sit. Create an off-center part using a tail comb on the opposite side.
-
5
Blow dry your hair using a round brush to create volume, or a flat brush to smooth the hair straight.
-
6
Sweep your hair back and over to the side of the head opposite the part using your hands.
-
7
Brush or comb all of your hair back toward the nape of your neck and over to the side.

Gather the hair with one hand so it rests just behind the ear.
-

Secure your side ponytail in place with a hair band.

Tips & Warnings
To create a wavy ponytail, divide the tail hair into sections and curl it with a large-barrel curling iron. Alternatively, straighten the tail using a large flat-bed iron.
For a more formal style, wrap a small section of hair around on the base of the ponytail to disguise the hair band. For a messier look, blow dry and style your hair with your fingers instead of using a comb or brush.
