How to Tie an Eye Splice

An eye splice is a useful boating knot because it is the quickest looped knot to tie. You tie it by splicing, or braiding, the unraveled end of a looped rope back into the body of the rope. The eye splice will create a loop that you can hook onto objects without difficulty. Use it while sailing or fishing and for many other purposes. The knot will not easily slip or come undone.

Things You'll Need

  • Three-strand boating rope
  • 1/2-inch-wide strip of masking tape

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the tape around the rope about six braids from its end.

    • 2

Separate the strands of the rope all the way back to the tape.

    • 3

Make a loop in the rope, sizing it to meet your needs. The tape will serve as the end of the loop once you braid the strands back into the rope.

    • 4

Lay the separated strands of rope out so that you have a top, center and bottom strand.

    • 5

Weave the center strand of rope under a strand of the braided rope and pull it up until the tape touches the braided rope. This creates the first weave to connect the loop to the rope.

    • 6

Weave the bottom strand through the hole between the bottom strand of rope and the other two braided strands and pull down to tighten it up to the tape.

    • 7

Weave the top strand of separated rope through the hole under the remaining top strand of rope and pull up to tighten. All three strands of separated rope from step 2 should now be woven into the braided rope, forming a loop.

    • 8

Repeat steps 4 through 7 four more times above the strand that you have spliced.

    • 9

Pull down on the loop to tighten the braids. Remove the tape.
