How to Know an Original Victorinox

How to Know an Original Victorinox thumbnail
Genuine Swiss Army Knives can be easily identified.

Victorinox is one of two companies that competed for over 100 years in making Swiss Army knives. In 2005 it bought its rival, Wenger, but the two still continue independently, supplying the Swiss Army and the world with knives, watches, cutlery, and other products. The Swiss Army buys half its requirements from each because one is in French-speaking Switzerland and the other in the German-speaking region of the country. Both only sell watches through authorized dealers. There are various ways to tell an original Victorinox.

Instructions

  1. Knives and Watches

    • 1

Check the marketing slogan on the box or literature that comes with a knife. Victorinox uses the words "The original Swiss Army Knife" while Wenger calls its products "The genuine Swiss Army Knife". These phrases are used by agreement between the two companies.

    • 2

Look at the base of the shank of the largest blade on a knife and if it is a genuine Victorinox the name will be engraved there.

    • 3

Study the logo printed on a knife handle. The Victorinox shield has five corners and the top of the shield has a small depression in the middle.

    • 4

Look at the dial of a watch. If the words "Swiss Army" are printed on it, the watch is an original Victorinox.

    • 5

Check the reference number on a watch. Each Victorinox watch carries a unique number and the company will confirm if it is genuine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Victorinox and Wenger are both legitimate Swiss Army suppliers, making the same products to the same standard. Only the names, badging and marketing differ.

  • There are many copies of Victorinox watches and knives around. When buying, take care to check for authenticity.
