How to Tie a Sliding Square Knot

A sliding square knot allows you to adjust the length of its cord or string, which can be useful for handmade jewelry and other projects. The sliding square knot is also commonly used for joining two ropes together for outdoor activities, such as tying sail covers, reefing sails and battens, securing camping tents, and tying other objects to a boat's structure. Tie a proper sliding square knot that will not come undone in under five minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Cross the two ends of the cord over top of each other, and then fold the right end back in the opposite direction. This will create the first loop around the unbent cord. The folded end should now be pointing the opposite direction as the one that has not been bent.

    • 2

Wrap the end of the folded cord under both cords, and then pull it back over the top of them. Pinch the two loops that have been made around so that there is at least an inch of space between them.

    • 3

Wrap the bent cord three times around both cords at the center of the two loops. Insert the end of the bent cord through the loop closest to the end of the other cord. Push each of the looped coils toward the loop closest to the end of the other cord and tighten the knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep in mind that the knot will generally take at least eight inches of cord or string to create, depending on thickness, so add this amount or more to the length of the material being used for your project.
