How to Use Pidgin With iChat Users

Save

Apple's iChat instant messaging application, included with Mac OS X, offers iChat accounts, which you can set up by clicking the "Get an iChat Account" button in iChat. IChat accounts work on the AOL Instant Messenger network but end in "@mac.com," unlike normal AIM accounts that don't include a domain. You can log in to an iChat account using the Pidgin instant messaging program by setting it up as an AIM account, or add iChat accounts to your buddy list in Pidgin if you have an AIM account.

Account Setup

  • Click the "Accounts" menu at the top of the Pidgin Buddy List window, and select "Manage Accounts."

  • Click the "Add" button to open the Add Account dialog.

  • Click the "Protocol" box under Login Options, and select "AIM."

  • Type your iChat username into the Username box in the form "name@mac.com".

  • Type your iChat account's password into the Password box, and click the "Remember Password" check box to save your password. Pidgin asks for your password each time you log in to iChat if you don't save your password.

  • Click the "Add" button to add your iChat account to Pidgin and log in.

Buddies

  • Click the "Buddies" menu at the top of the Pidgin Buddy List window, and select "Add Buddy."

  • Click the "Account" box in the Add Buddy, and select your AIM or iChat account if you have multiple accounts set up in Pidgin.

  • Type the iChat user's username into the Buddy's Username box in the form "name@mac.com".

  • Click the "Add" button.

  • Double-click your iChat buddy in the Buddy List window to initiate a conversation.
