How to Make a Tallit Used in the Bible
A tallit is a prayer shawl that is used in Jewish religious services. These shawls also show up in the Old Testament of the Bible, and students may learn about the tallit in Sunday school or Hebrew school. You can turn this lesson into a craft project, which will engage the students in a creative way. Using fabric and a few other materials, you can put together a project that is both fun and educational.

1
Cut a rectangle of white cotton fabric for each child making a tallit. Cut the fabric with pinking shears, so the fabric won't fray. Make each rectangle 1 foot by 3 feet in size.
-
2
Give one rectangle of fabric to each student. Have the students lay the fabric flat on a desk in front of them to decorate.
-
-
3
Let the students decorate their tallit with markers. Traditional tallit typically have blue and silver embellishments, but modern tallit can be any color. Let kids draw any pattern they like on their tallit.
-
4
Help the students write a few Hebrew letters at the center of the tallit. You can have the students write Hebrew letters they are learning in class, or just write their name.
-
5
Instruct students to glue 6-inch-long strings of yarn at each end of the tallit, making the traditional frayed ends of the tallit.
