How to Make a Tiny Top Hat
If your child enjoys playing with miniature dolls in a doll house, you can encourage this imaginative play by giving her accessories for her dollhouse dolls. For example, give your child a tiny top hat that her dollhouse doll can wear on a night to the opera. Instead of trying to find a tiny top hat from a hobby shop or toy store, make a tiny top hat yourself using a few basic craft materials.
Things You'll Need
- Polymer clay
- Rolling pin
- Circular cookie cutter, 1/2 inch
- Clay knife
- Cookie sheet
- Oven
- Tacky glue
- Acrylic glaze, clear
- Paintbrush
- Ribbon, 1/4 inch wide
- Scissors

Roll out 1 oz. of black polymer clay, using a rolling pin, into a sheet that measures 1/8 inch thick.

Cut out two 1/2 inch circles from the polymer clay sheet using a circular cookie cutter.

Place one of the clay circles over the tip of your pinkie, and fold down the edges to cover your pinkie. Press your fingertip onto the top of the clay to make it flat, then remove the form. This will be the top portion of the top hat.

Cut out a 1/4 inch circle from the middle of the second clay circle using a clay knife. This will be the brim of the top hat.

Place the brim and the top of the hat onto a cookie sheet, and bake the two shapes in a 200 degree F. oven for 5 minutes. Let the shapes cool for 30 minutes.

Squeeze a line of tacky glue around the hole on the brim of the hat, and press the top of the hat onto the glued area. This will complete the basic top hat form.

Paint the entire hat using clear acrylic glaze. Let the glaze dry for 30 minutes. This will make the hat appear shiny like a real top hat.

Cut a piece of ribbon with scissors to measure 2 inches long. Squeeze a line of glue down the length of the ribbon piece, and wrap it around the area where the top of the hat meets the brim. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes before using the tiny top hat.
