A spinner bait is an artificial lure that often proves useful to bass anglers. Designed to imitate a swimming bait fist, spinner baits are available in a wide range of sizes, weights and colors. Available from various retail outlets, spinner baits are also made at home by some anglers. The design of a homemade spinner bait involves consideration of various elements that impact time on the water. Design a spinner bait to suit your specific needs.

Instructions

    • 1

      Place a bead on the free end of the spinner bait wire form. Slide the bead up to the bend of the spinner bait. Choose a plain metal bead in silver or gold. Consider using a red or orange bead for extra visibility.

      Insert a U shaped clevis through the hole in a Colorado spinner blade. Choose a silver spinner blade for clear water or a gold color for murky water.

      Place the assembled spinner blade and clevis on the spinner bait wire. Insert the wire through the small holes in the end of the clevis. Push the clevis up to the bead on the wire. Slide another bead in the color of of your choice and based on design onto the wire below the spinner and clevis.

      Form a U shaped bend in the wire 1/2 inch below the last bead. Hold the wire with a pair of needle nose pliers and bend the wire with a second pair of pliers.

      Remove the pliers and slide one end of a barrel swivel onto the bend in the wire. Hold the wire in the bend once again with pliers. Form a loop in the wire around the barrel swivel with the pliers. Twist the end of the wire around the main wire length to secure the barrel swivel in place.

      Attach a split ring to the end of the barrel swivel with split ring pliers. Attach a willow blade spinner to the split ring. Choose a blade to match or contrast the Colorado blade or consider a painted blade or blade with a hologram or fish scale design based on conditions or preference.

      Slide a silicon skirt onto the collar of the jig head hook. Choose a solid or multicolor skirt. Select red, orange, white or green for shallow water and early spring. Choose black, blue or purple for late summer and deeper waters.
