How to Remove a Steel Frame Window From a Basement

If you want to replace an old metal frame basement window with a new, energy efficient vinyl window, you'll have to take out the old basement window first. Removing a metal frame basement window is not a difficult task but will require a bit of patience. Typically, metal frame basement windows are installed with some type of sash or flashing and are caulked along the exterior to keep moisture from entering around the frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Score around the edges on the outside of the metal frame basement window with a utility knife to break the caulking away from the frame and the basement's exterior.

    • 2

Go inside the basement and open the window to its fullest open position. Look for nail fins holding the sash in place, if equipped with sash or flashing. Remove the nail fins with pliers, then pull the sash out of the window.

    • 3

Go back outside and unfasten the retaining screws with a screw gun. The screws will be around the inside of the frame going through the metal frame into the basement wall.

    • 4

Insert a pry bar between the metal window frame and the exterior of the basement wall. Pry up and break it away from the wall. Then insert the pry bar into the sides of the frame to loosen the window frame from the wall completely.

    • 5

Pull the metal frame window out of the basement wall from the exterior, then set it aside. Pull out any shims, then scrape the caulk off the basement wall recess with a putty knife to ready the space for a replacement window.
