How to Care for the Ears of a Siberian Husky

How to Care for the Ears of a Siberian Husky thumbnail
If a Husky constantly shakes its head, it could have ear problems.

Ear care is a component of grooming the Husky and keeping it in good health. A Siberian Husky's ears are not that different from those of most other dogs. As with other canines, a Husky's ears can accumulate wax and dirt that requires removal to prevent further complications. From monitoring the ears for parasites to cleaning or even medicating them, vigilant and committed pet owners can keep their Husky's ears in top notch condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the Husky's ears every two or three days for any evidence of mites, fleas or infection. Be aware that the Husky's activity level and the position of his erect ears make the inside of the ear prone to abrasion from objects it may encounter. If you notice an abrasion, gently clean the ears with a piece of damp gauze and contact your veterinarian for further advice. Swelling, discharge or foul odor from the ear canal could indicate an infection. Take the Husky to the vet if you notice any of these conditions.

Mix 2 1/2 tsp. boric acid powder, 1 1/4 cups water and 3/4 cups white vinegar in a squeeze bottle. Shake gently to mix the contents.

    • 3

Squat down next to the Siberian Husky's shoulders on one side of its body, facing toward its head. Wrap your left arm around the dog's neck and hug him gently toward you to keep his head from moving. You may find it easier to put the Husky on a low table for this task, depending on the its size.

    • 4

Swipe a piece of gauze inside the ear to remove any surface wax or dirt. Wipe the area again with a fresh piece of gauze.

    • 5

Tilt the Husky's head to the side so you can administer the cleaning solution. The ear canal should be tilting upward. You may find that an extra person is helpful in this situation.

    • 6

Pull the ear taut, by gripping the outside of the ear, near the canal, but do it gently so you don't hurt the Husky. Squeeze the cleaning solution into the ear. Squeeze enough so you can see it in the ear canal.

    • 7

Massage the base of the ear canal gently while holding the Husky's head gently to the side. This will help the cleansing solution drain down into the ear and cleanse it.

    • 8

Let go of the dog and step back so it can shake its head. Wipe the inside of the outer ear canal with a piece of gauze to soak up the cleansing solution and any dirt or wax that may have surfaced.

Tips & Warnings

  • Restraining the dog with your arm may not be necessary if it doesn't mind having its ears cleaned.

  • Never insert anything, including your fingers, into the Husky's ear canal. To do so could result in damage to its ear.

  • When the Husky shakes its head after you pour in the cleansing solution, the solution will fly out of its ears--especially since they stand erect--and splash onto anything in the area. Undertake this task in an outside area for best results.
