How to Make an Infrared Filter

How to Make an Infrared Filter thumbnail
Infrared filters block out visible light.

An infrared filter is used in infrared photography to allow infrared light to pass through the camera, but blocks out the majority of visible light. This helps to create a very unique type of photograph that can be used for a wide variety of projects. An infrared filter can be very expensive, with some of the cheapest costing over $50. You can make your own infrared camera filter out of old camera film and a few other items and tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Developed, unexposed film roll
  • Scissors or any cutting tool
  • Nontoxic glue

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the black end pieces off a bit of developed film. Take the two pieces you cut from the film and glue the pieces together.

    • 2

Remove the outside casing of your digital camera. Take off the camera's lens and expose the charged couple device, or the CCD.

    • 3

Check the filter behind the lens to determine if it is clear or colored. If the filter is clear you will not need to remove it, but if it is a colored filter it will need to be removed. You can use a screwdriver or similar tool to get the filter off.

Apply a small bit of glue to the edges of the two film pieces you glued together. Apply the filter to the CCD piece. Give the glue an hour to dry. Put your camera back together and take photos.
