How to Install Linux into a VMware Guest Partition

Installing a Linux distribution onto a VMware guest partition requires a few steps, but can be accomplished within an hour or two. Installation may vary slightly depending on the Linux distribution that is used; this article details the process for the most recent version of Ubuntu, the most popular and user-friendly distribution of the Linux operating system. Before beginning the installation process, make sure that a VMware product is installed. If a virtual SCSI adapter is desired for increased storage capacity, make sure that it is installed before you begin.

Things You'll Need

  • Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10 CD
  • VMWare product (ESXi/ESX 3.5 and later, Workstation 4.0 and later, Fusion1.0 and later, ACE 1.0 and later)

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the CD into the optical drive on your computer.

    • 2

Click "Power On" on the virtual machine. It is helpful to know that a virtual machine does not exist physically on earth, but rather exists within a computer, forming an isolated operating system within the primary operating system. Therefore, clicking "Power On" refers to a mouse click, not a physical button. This will start the installation process, and the installer for the Linux distribution will copy files to the virtual disk on the virtual machine.

    • 3

Click the reset button for the virtual machine only if it does not restart on its own after all the files are copied. You will know that all necessary files are copied when the CD is ejected.

    • 4

Follow prompts given by the installer to complete the installation process. During installation, the monitor will display the message, "Configuring apt/ Scanning the mirror," which means that the network is being scanned. Simply wait for the scan, which may take ten minutes or more.

Install a VMware product with the tar installer. Directions for how to do this vary from product to product; consult the instructions that are included with the product.

    • 6

Set the HTTP proxy in the Network Proxy Preferences dialog box after the Linux distribution is installed. Go to the distribution's user interface and choose "System," "Preferences" and then "Network Proxy" to make this change.
