An O-ring is a type of seal situated in the groove that connects two parts, and compresses when they are pushed together. It is used for a wide variety of manufacturing purposes, such as connections between two pipes or in a household blender. The shape of an O-ring is determined by two dimensions, the inner diameter of the ring (how far it is across the inside of the ring) and the cross-section diameter (how thick the ring itself is). Depending on the application, O-rings require different levels of compression and stretch. These levels can be used to find the required inner diameter and cross-section diameter.
Things You'll Need
- eFunda O-Ring Calculator
- Specified input levels for bore and groove diameter and tolerance
- Specified levels for O-ring minimum and maximum compression
- Specified levels for O-ring cross-section diameter tolerance
Calculate O-Ring Size
Visit eFunda.com and click "Calculators" on the right-hand side of the top menu bar.
Scroll down to the second section, "Engineering Design Aids" and select "O-Ring Calculator."
Enter the specified levels for each item (e.g. "Groove diameter," "bore tolerance," etc.) into each box and specify the measurement unit.
Click "Calculate." The required inner diameter and cross-section diameter for your O-ring will be displayed.
