How Do I Do an IPCONFIG Release on a Mac?

Computers connected to the Internet must be properly configured to access other machines or the network. DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, allows computers to be configured automatically, without the aid of a network administrator. IPCONFIG is a network tool for Microsoft Windows that enables a user to force a computer to update or release its network configuration information. Apple's Mac OS X operating system has a similar ability.

  • Click the Apple logo in the upper-left section of the menu bar.

  • Select "System Preferences."

  • Click the "Network" icon in the "Internet & Wireless" section.

  • Click the lock icon in the lower-left corner and enter your password to make changes.

  • Select the type of network interface you are currently using in the list on the left.

  • Click the "Advanced" button in the lower-right corner.

  • Select the "TCP/IP" tab and click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button.
