How to Add Characters in Facebook

Save

Special characters range from practical umlaut symbols to more cutesy smiley face and heart shapes. Whether you need to communicate with international Facebook contacts or you just want to add fun flare to your profile, adding special characters to a Facebook page takes just a few seconds. Facebook is unicode compatible, so you can add special characters into virtually any wall posting, message or status update.

  • Click on the Windows "Start" button.

  • Type "Character Map" into the blank field at the bottom of the main "Start" menu screen.

  • Click on the "Character Map" icon when it appears.

  • Scroll the list of characters until you find the one you want to use.

  • Click "Select" and "Copy." This saves a virtual copy of the special symbol to your clipboard.

  • Visit Facebook.com and log into your account.

  • Navigate to the message, wall posting or comment where you want to add additional characters.

  • Click on the place where you want to insert the characters. The currently selected text position is indicated with a flashing black line.

  • Press and hold the "Ctrl" key, then tap the "V" key. Your special character appears at the selected place in your Facebook posting.

  • Repeat Steps 1 through 9 to insert additional special characters. There is no limit to the number of special symbols inserted into Facebook.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan on regularly using a certain symbol, note the character's "Keystroke Code" in the lower right-hand corner of the Character Map. To insert the symbol faster in future Facebook messages, you can hold the "Alt" key and type this code on your keyboard's numpad.
