How to Open a .Kap File

Save

Files ending in ".exe" and other executable formats are opened simply by double-clicking them. Other files, such as ".jpg" image files and ".mp3" music files are opened in associated programs by default. If you locate a ".kap" file on your computer, you won't find it as simple to view. A ".kap" file only opens in a niche program sold by MapTech. The ".kap" file format contains data for boating charts and maps used by MapTech and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Before you can open a ".kap" file, you need the right software.

Things You'll Need

  • MapTech boating chart software
  • Windows XP
  • Visit MapTechNavigation.com.

  • Click the "Learn More" link underneath the "U. S. Boating Charts" heading.

  • Click "Add to Cart" in the left column. As of the date of publication, ".kap" files were not viewable with any free software, and they are used almost exclusively with MapTech navigation software. If you already have MapTech's software, skip to step 6.

  • Proceed with the site's checkout, providing credit card information.

  • Insert the MapTech installation disc after it arrives in the mail. MapTech's software is not available for direct download, but expedited shipping is available. The installation process is automated, and you just need to click through a series of onscreen "Next" prompts to install the software.

  • Open MapTech's U.S. Boating Charts software.

  • Click "File."

  • Click "Open."

  • Double-click the ".kap" file you want to open. The chart opens and appears on your screen.

Tips & Warnings

  • MapTech's software is not compatible with 64-bit systems, including Windows 7 and Vista. You must install MapTech's U.S. Boating Charts program on a computer running Windows XP.
