How to Sign a Farewell Card

Save

Signing a farewell card to a colleague or other person sounds simple enough but it is surprisingly complex when you look at the bigger picture. Bidding farewell to a close friend or family member that is moving away is easy enough because you can write a personal message in the card that reflects your relationship with that person. However, signing a farewell card to a colleague you do not know well or do not like is a different story. Next time a farewell card comes across your desk for your signature there are a few ideas you can use to always sign the card in a polite and respectful manner.

  • Write a funny personal message only to a good friend or co-worker with whom you get along well and have the type of relationship where you joke with one another. In this situation you can get away with writing a funny message such as, "Good Riddance" because the recipient knows you are joking.

  • Sign a farewell card to someone you don't care for using a polite phrase such as "You'll be missed" or "Good Luck." Writing a too personal message such as "I will miss you" or "You'll do great at your new job" comes across as condescending to someone with whom you do not have a close or friendly relationship.

  • Provide your signature beneath your message or forgo a personal message completely and simply sign your name to the farewell card.
