The skin on your body is made up of about 16 opaque layers. Your lips have only three delicate, translucent layers, making them more susceptible to drying out. Stay well-hydrated and applying moisturizing ingredients, such as aloe vera, to keep them moist and soft. Use off-the-shelf lip balms or moisturizers according to the manufacturer's instructions, or create your own moisturizing aloe solution at home.

Things You'll Need

  • Aloe vera leaf or pure aloe vera gel
  • Serrated kitchen knife
  • Spoon
  • Coconut oil
  • Vitamin E capsule
  • Airtight container
  • Soft-bristled toothbrush

Use store-bought pure aloe vera gel or fresh gel from a leaf. Release the clear gel from the leaf by slicing it lengthwise and squeezing it out with your hands.

Combine a spoonful of aloe gel with half as much coconut oil and few drops of vitamin E oil, which you can squeeze out of a soft vitamin E capsule. Use these oils as barriers to lock in the moisturizing properties of the aloe and protect your lips from harsh, drying forces, such as extreme heat or wind. Stir the mixture thoroughly and store it in the refrigerator in a small, airtight container.

Gently brush your lips with a soft-bristled toothbrush to slough off any dead skin cells. Coat a clean fingertip with a bit of the aloe mixture and apply it to your upper and lower lips, gently massaging the moisturizing balm in a circular motion. Apply the solution at least once per day. Use it more often in harsh or windy weather conditions or when your lips are particularly dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store any unused fresh aloe vera gel in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • Use organic soybean oil or jojoba seed oil instead of coconut oil.
  • Apply aloe lip moisturizer before bedtime and sleep with a humidifier in the room to encourage overnight hydration.
  • To help keep your lips moist, drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid licking your lips.
