How to Do Egg Paintings

Eggs aren't only decorated for Easter. Egg painting is a fun artistic pursuit that anyone who likes to paint can enjoy. The egg shell makes an effective, if delicate, canvas for displaying your tiny paintings. If approached and preserved properly, an egg painting can last a lifetime.

Instructions

    • 1

Poke a hole in the bottom of your egg shell. Use a pin to do this. Something larger than a sewing pin will be necessary to allow the insides of the egg to drain. Move the pin around in the circle, stirring up the insides and working to get it all out. This may take some time, but you want to drain until as much of the inside is out as you can get.

    • 2

Place egg shells in the oven at about 150 degrees F. Place all of the egg shells you have on a cookie sheet and allow them to stay in the oven for 30 to 40 minutes. This will dry up anything left inside the eggs. This is called curing.

    • 3

Prime the eggs that may have become discolored during the curing process. This is typically not a problem unless you are going to be using light colors in your work. A coat of acrylic primer is all you need. Cover the egg with white primer and let them dry.

    • 4

Paint your eggs. Place the egg in a metal egg stand or even a cardboard egg holder found in Easter egg kits. This will keep the egg steady as you paint your design or art work. Use a brush with a thin tip unless you are painting the entire egg one color. A slightly larger brush works for this. Use acrylic or oil paint and allow the work to dry overnight before you touch it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can plug the drainage holes with plaster if you like, but since the hole will be on the bottom of the egg, it won't be noticeable to anyone.

  • Adding a coat of clear lacquer to your finished art can add a glossy shine and help protect the work.
