How to Tie a Spade End Hook
Spade end hooks are used by many anglers in the British Isles and Europe when fishing for carp. Featuring a small diameter wire, spade hooks are not readily found or used by anglers in the United States. The distinguishing difference between a spade and traditional hook is the lack of an eye. The shank of a spade hook is flattened in the location where an eye would normally be located. Spade hooks are attached to a line or leader with a specialized knot.

1
Hold the spade hook by the bend so the shank is accessible.
-
2
Place the end of a length of monofilament line along the shank of the spade hook. Pull the end of the line down and below the hook bend for 6 inches.
-
-
3
Turn the end of the line back up along side the hook shank to form a loop. Hold the loop in place along the bend of the hook.
-
4
Pull the main line along the hook shank tight. Wrap the end of the line around the shank and main line five times.
-
5
Feed the end of the line through the loop being held at the bend of the spade hook. Moisten the knot with water or saliva.
-
6
Pull the main line above the hook and the free end at the same time in opposite directions to tighten the knot down against shank.
