How to Achieve Excellence in Fundraising
Raising money for a cause is an undertaking that takes patience, drive, commitment, accountability, and a sense of strong belief. During the current economic downturn, sharing can get a bit scarce. Yet, the act of giving should not be ignored because people in society are in desperate need of food, shelter, jobs, clothes, education and other resources. To achieve excellence in fundraising, your organization must remember to keep some basic principles in mind.

1
Create a proposal that is comprehensive in its objective. The organization should operate with specific goals. Establish a mission statement and function according to its objectives. Write down a list of resources, funds, and support networks needed to complete each task. Plan campaigns to raise awareness as well as funds. Define what types of gifts are acceptable to the cause, such as any special gifts or annual donations.
-
2
Put together a committed fundraising board. The fundraising board members must be active, trustworthy, interested in giving back, and possess the necessary skills to contribute to the cause. Ensure that each person's background and resume is impeccable. Play on each person's strengths to maximize the fundraising operations. For instance, if one member has a knack for speaking, designate that person to be the keynote speaking representative. Also, recruit volunteers to help with administrative tasks and for other events.

3
Host annual fundraising events. Once or twice a year, host a formal banquet to shine light on the progress that the organization is making in the community. Invite present donors and potential donors and provide them with an overview of the project and its development.
-
4
Develop marketing skills. Sometimes, asking for money seems a bit off-putting despite it being for an honorable cause. However, do not feel ashamed about wanting to help others. Thus, be strategic when asking for funds on behalf of the organization. Have a professional and upbeat attitude and be passionate when pitching ideas to potential donors. Always ask for an appropriate amount of money. Have printed fliers and business cards to hand out at networking events.
-
5
Express thanks to your donors. Send out thank-you cards to donors for their generosity. This goes a long way to let them know that their donations were not made in vain.
-
6
Maintain integrity through your fundraising actions. Do not abuse the funds that were given to the organization. In the past, some groups have resorted to pocketing the donations or using them for the wrong purpose. Show how committed you are by keeping documents showing where every penny of the proceeds go to the cause.
-
7
Keep the public and the donors updated on your fundraising efforts. Create an interactive website that educates the public on your mission and encourages people to take part in changing the world. Have a place on your site where those interested in donating can do so through the Web.
