How to Catch Triploid Trout
Triploid trout are sterile rainbow trout that cannot reproduce and quickly grow to potentially trophy size, given the right conditions. Rainbow trout are popular game fish among many freshwater anglers. Featuring a reddish color on their sides, rainbows are favored for their excellent flavor. Some streams do not have native rainbow and the introduction of these fish often proves detrimental to native species, so the sterile triploids are sometimes stocked.

1
Attach an in-line, spinner lure to your fishing line with an improved clinch knot. Moisten the knot before pulling it tight. Trim excess from the free end of the line extending from the knot with scissors. Choose a 1/4 oz. or lighter in-line spinner based on water conditions and personal preference.
-
2
Stand facing the area in the stream or river that you want to fish. Turn your shoulders slightly upstream.
-
-
3
Cast the in-line spinner across and up stream from a hole or run where you suspect triploid trout are holding or feeding.
-
4
Raise your rod tip as the spinner enters the water. Allow the spinner to wash down with the current toward the target area. Reel in line to take up excess slack or guide the spinner to the location.
-
5
Reel in the line as the spinner washes past the hole, log or rock where triploid trout are likely to be located. Continue to take up line and retrieve the spinner as it moves downstream. Keep a tight line as rainbow trout often follow a spinner downstream, then strike as it moves across or slightly upstream.
-
6
Raise the rod tip to set the hook when a triploid trout strikes. Although the slashing motion use by a rainbow typically sets the hook, a larger triploid may require additional work to set the hook. Keep the line tight and reel in the line to work the triploid rainbow trout toward you.
