How to Slice an Image With Gimp

If you need to work with a graphics image of design that someone else has given you, it helps if the major elements of the image are on separate layers. This will make it easier for you to make changes to one element without having any impact on another. If the elements in the image you get are not on separate layers, you use the tools of a graphics program, like the freeware application GIMP.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the image you want to work with onto your computer.

    • 2

Start GIMP. Select "File" from the menu at the top and choose "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate and open the file you loaded.

    • 3

Select the "Path" tool from the toolbar. Use the tool to draw a path around some element in the image you would like to have on a separate layer.

    • 4

Go to the tool options panel and click "Selection from Path." Select "Edit" from the menu and choose "Cut."

    • 5

Go to the "Layers" panel and click on the "New Layer" button. Then select "Edit" from the menu and choose "Paste Into." Repeat this process to separate all the parts of the original image onto their own layers. Save your work.
