Tying flags to staffs can be accomplished using some standard household items.

Flags represent countries, communities and organizations around the world. As such, they require respectful care in their storage and display. The tradition of raising the flag for celebrations and patriotism should be done with no damage to the flag at all. Using the small eyelets at the edge of the flag and a few household items, you can tie your flag to a staff with little hassle and no harm to the flag's fabric.

Instructions

  1. Rubber Band Method

    • 1

Push the end of a rubber band through the eyelet or grommet at the top corner of the flag. Pull the rubber band until it is halfway through the grommet. Take the left side of the rubber band and hold the hole open with your left hand. Pull the right side of the rubber band through the hole in the left of the rubber band. Release the hole and pull the right side of the rubber band tab taut. Repeat this step with the bottom grommet on the flag. You should now have two rubber band loops, one on each corner of the flag.

    • 2

Place the bottom rubber band loop over the staff and push down until the staff reaches the top rubber band loop. Push the top rubber band loop over the staff until the flag is even with the top of the staff.

    • 3

Place a five- or six-inch piece of electrical tape over each rubber band loop to hold the flag in place. Remove the tape and loops when it is time to remove the flag from the staff.

    Cable Tie Method

    • 4

Wrap the ends of a cable tie around the top of the staff.

    • 5

Push one end of the cable tie through the top grommet of the flag. Insert the tab end of the cable tie into the slot on the opposite end. Pull the cable tie taut so that the top corner of the flag stays in place.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 using the second cable tie at the bottom corner of the flag. Cut the cable ties when you are ready to release the flag.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use tape directly on the flag material.
