How to Call Monaco From the United States

The tiny principality of Monaco, surrounded on all sides by France, shares many things in common with that country, including the official language, the currency and many of the government policies (tax laws not included). The method of placing a phone call to Monaco, however, differs, after recent changes to the Monaco phone system. Follow these steps to place a call to this royal retreat.

1. Determine what time it is in Monaco. Monaco is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, which means it's 6 hours later in Monaco than it is on the East Coast of the United States, and 9 hours later than it is on the West Coast.
2. Make sure your Monaco phone number is up-to-date. If you have a number that's preceded by a 33, the French country code, it's outdated. Drop the 33 and use 377, the Monaco country code, instead. If you have a phone number that has ten digits, starting with a 04, it's also out-of-date; drop the 04 and use the remaining eight digits.
3. Dial 011, the international access code.
4. Dial 377, the Monaco country code.
5. Dial the remaining eight digits (the first two should be 92 or 93).

Tips & Warnings

• Calling between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. or on weekends will often cost up to 50 percent less than calling during business hours. Call your long-distance carrier to find out which hours are cheapest to call internationally with your long-distance plan.
• If you're having problems getting through, dial 00 for the international operator and ask him or her to place the call.
• If you're calling from a pay phone, you'll need to have a calling card or charge the call to a credit card - you won't be able to feed the phone with coins fast enough to keep yourself connected. Follow the instructions printed on the phone for placing the call.
