After mastering the basics, use your talents to create complicated-looking afghans.

Learning to crochet can be difficult for some, as most directions use abbreviations and terminology that beginners may not be familiar with. This results in beginners having to reference a crochet chart and follow the complicated instructions. Take a deep breath and get your yarn and crochet needle ready to begin creating a very basic stitch. After you get the hang of it, use different sizes of crochet needles and different yarn weights for a number of projects.

Instructions

    • 1

Unravel 12 inches of yarn from the yarn ball and tie the end into a slip knot by creating a loop with the yarn end and pulling the piece of yarn closer to the yarn ball through the hole in the loop. Pull the end of the yarn to tighten the slip knot just a bit.

    • 2

Insert the hook end of the crochet needle through the yarn loop created by pushing the yarn string close to the yarn ball through the first loop. Tighten the slip knot by pulling on the free end of the yarn, but don't tighten it too much so you can't get the crochet needle out easily.

    • 3

Wrap the yarn close to the yarn ball around the index finger of your left hand and hold the free end of the yarn with the thumb and middle or ring finger of the same hand while the right hand works with the crochet needle.

    • 4

Wrap the yarn ball end of the yarn around the hook end of the crochet needle once, while it is still through the slip knot, and use the hook to pull that section of yarn through the loop of the initial slip knot. This creates a new loop.

    • 5

Wrap the yarn ball end of the yarn around the hook again while it is still in the second created loop and pull that section through the second loop. You should start to see a chain of yarn forming. Repeat this until you have the length you need for your project. For example, if making a decorative pot holder, make a 15-to-20 loop chain.

    • 6

Press the hook of the crochet needle through the hole created by the top two strands of the section of chain just before the last loop. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull that yarn through both the two-strand loop and the initial loop on the needle. You should end up with only one loop on the needle.

    • 7

Push the crochet needle through the next hole in the chain to the left of the first in the second row, wrap the yarn around and pull it through all loops. Repeat until you get to the first section of the yarn chain where the slip knot began.

    • 8

Repeat the steps and make the project as thick as you'd like by adding more rows using the same technique.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure that when making the initial chain that each loop is approximately the same size and that you are using consistent tension with the yarn to make certain that the project comes out even and not full of misplaced holes.
