How to Carpet a Jon Boat

Carpeting a Jon boat helps to prevent riders from slipping when moving around or when they get in and out of the boat. Carpet provides increased traction when shoes are not worn. Install marine carpet in a boat, which is designed to prevent mold and mildew or rotting that would occur if traditional carpet were installed in a boat.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the surface where the carpet is to be installed with a damp cloth. This removes any dirt and debris that may be present.

    • 2

Measure the width and length of the area with the tape measure. Transfer the measurements to a section of marine carpet. Cut the carpet to the required size with the utility knife.

    • 3

Lie the carpet in the boat for a test fit. Make any adjustments to the carpet if it does not fit correctly. Secure one side of the carpet with double-sided tape.

    • 4

Lift up on one opposite side of the carpet and fold it over onto the taped side. Apply the marine glue to the floor with the trowel. Put grooves in the adhesive by using the notched side of the trowel.

    • 5

Pull the carpet over and lie it over the glue. Smooth the carpet using your hands by working from the center outward. Allow the adhesive to dry for two to three hours.

    • 6

Remove the double-sided tape and glue down the other side of the carpet in the same manner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Vacuum the carpet once the glue has completely dried.
