How to Put a Signature on a Painting

How to Put a Signature on a Painting thumbnail
Choose a style of signature and be consistent on each painting.

Signing your painting upon completion gives it authenticity and validity, as you are making a statement that it is your original work of art. This not only makes it official and complete, but art buyers want to know who the artists are in order to buy future paintings from them. Treat the signature as a business logo or branding by deciding beforehand how you will sign each painting.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign the painting in the same medium you painted in to give it more authenticity. For instance, if your painting is an acrylic, you should use acrylic paint and a fine-point brush to sign your name. Blend in the signature with your painting so that it does not stand out too much.

    • 2

Avoid putting your signature too close to the edge of the canvas; you want to leave enough room for the picture frame.

    • 3

Use the same signature style for each piece of artwork you complete, whether it be your initials, full name, first initial and last name or other style of signature.

    • 4

Sign the painting as soon as the work is complete, preferably while some of your medium is still slightly wet to better blend in the signature with the painting itself. Sign your name before applying the final coat of varnish.
